We're sleeping more in lockdown, but the quality is worse

I have read an article about how our sleeping has changed during lockdown. According to the authors of this text and sleep scientists, the fact that due to pandemic, we spend more time at home, and often we also work and study at home, without wasting time on various commuting, we can afford to sleep longer. We sleep more, but the quality of our sleep is changed, which can have a negative effect on our wellbeing. The research carried out by specialist shows that difference between the bedtime on weekdays and weekends has become blurred, normally, most people go to bed earlier and wake up earlier than the weekend, but under lockdown, though, sleep patterns make every day look more like the weekend.

The deterioration of the quality of sleep not only affects our fatigue the next day, but also research shows that it is important for our immune system and fighting infectious diseases. Moreover, good quality sleep helps our mind stay sharp. So what should we do to take care of our sleep quality? A consortium of sleep scientists has published a list of recommendations. "These include keeping a regular sleep schedule, avoiding using to bed for activities other than sleep, avoiding electronic devices before bedtime, taking regular exercise and getting as much daylight as possible, especially in the mornings".

In my opinion, it is very good that such lists to improve the quality of sleep are created. I know that many people struggle with this problem, they sleep a lot, but they are not sleepy, thanks to such articles we know that it is not about quantity but quality.

Pity we cannot get more daylight in the fresh air as we spend most of our mornings and early afternoons in front of computer screens.
