I read an article about the current situation in Texas, which is known for its ,,sprawling deserts and excruciating heatwaves, but right now, it's a thick layer of ice.". Such low temperatures have not been seen there for 30 years. Temperatures in some Texas cities hit 9F (-18C) in this weekend, it's 40 to 50 degrees below average, and are expected to stay that way for the next week.

According to the US National Weather Service, this is down to an "Arctic break", which appeared on the border between the US and Canada, bringing snowstorms and low temperatures. Arctic frost moved through Canada and the United States, and spilled out into the Texas. For the first time in the US state, all 254 counties are under a winter storm warning and the temperature in Dallas is colder than in Anchorage, Alaska. On Sunday, President John Biden declared an emergency in Texas, which oblige US agencies to ,,co-ordinate disaster relief in the state". Also, Electric Reliability Council of Texas initiated interruptions in rotational power supply to reduce the demand for the power system, and a third level energy emergency alert has been issued statewide. In just one week, low temperatures and large amounts of snow have already led to the cancellation of hundreds of flights from the state and 120 car accidents in which 6 people were killed and dozens were needed hospital treatment. According to the NWS opinion, this temperature will last for at least another week.

In my opinion, this is another example of how our climate is changing. It is not known whether this situation will be long-term, but in my opinion Texas should implement all precautions and be well prepared for the next waves of frost.
