1920s Women’s Fashion
The interwar period is a time of crisis but also a time of fun, freedom, entertainment, the heyday of new fashion and art and it is also above all a time of emancipation for women. They were given the right to vote, started to driving the cars, smoking cigarettes and going to cinemas. In the 1920s clothing began to centered around revolutionary freedom in both fashion and morals.
What did women wear in the 1920s?
1920s it’s more than a age of precious costiums, strings of pearls, sequins or feathers, that’s a rejection of formality and multiple layers, in favour of comfort and more natural look. In those days a popular outfit has become a suit (la garconne) - made very often of economical fabrics - consisting of a skirt or dress combined with a jacket, it was perfect costume for working women. The 20s are also the time of birth „Little black dress” designed and promoted by Coco Chanel. Thanks to Coco, the black color acquired a diffrent character at the time and the dress is worn by women all over the world to this day. Another trend for women popularity in the 1920s was that of sportswear worn as daywear. Sportswear had long been an acceptable form of wear for men, but in the 20s, it also became acceptable for women. Patou’yellow skirt and sweater set show how much tennis clothes influced design.
